Chapter 1. The Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

A working slice of the real reader — press ▶. The book reads aloud while the gold zone stays put; your child scrolls to keep the narrated passage inside it (simulated here, or scroll it yourself). Points and the sync light stay hidden during reading and reveal only on pause — nothing on screen to game.

Our philosophy

Why
Verafy?

Verafy Learning is built on a simple idea: the hard, formative work of learning can't be handed to a machine without ceasing to be learning. So we verify the learning itself — by engaging eyes, ears, and hands in a closed loop that proves real attention. That proof is analog and it runs on your device. AI never performs the verification, and it never receives anything personal about the learner — no name, no face, no profile. AI only assists with teaching, and we use it sparingly — most of all at the Guild level, where it helps deliver university-level subjects. That restraint is what keeps Verafy both honest and affordable: Verafy Reader is free for every family, forever; Verafy Academy is $10 a month (or $100 a year) for your whole household of up to ten; and Verafy Guild is $10 a month per person. One umbrella, three ways to learn — the reading and the thinking always stay yours.

One umbrella, three ways to learn

Reader, Academy, and Guild.

Verafy Learning is for every learner — the six-year-old sounding out a first sentence, the teen catching up, the adult finally reading the books they always meant to, and the curious mind ready for a university-level subject. Same verified-learning method everywhere: eyes, ears, and hands, on your device.

Private by design

Most education apps profit from children’s data. Verafy never does.

The free tier:

On your device, by default

The books, the narration, the verification, the points, and the reading history all live and run on your family’s device. Your account is a verified adult email plus your ZIP or postal code. Each reader enrolls with just a first name or an icon and a birthday — so we can protect and pace things for young readers, without ever needing your child’s full identity. That’s the whole list. We never ask whether you’re a parent; we simply protect any reader whose birthday says they’re a child. That information stays in your account, is never sold or shared, and never goes to any third party. Your weekly report card is built from a minimal stats digest — minutes, sessions, points, books — labeled by the reading animal each child picks. Verification photos and your child’s voice are captured on the device and stay there. No analytics, no tracking, nothing watching your child read.

Adult email · ZIP · reader name or icon & birthday · never shared
The premium tier:

AI with nothing personal in it

When Verafy asks questions and grades answers, exactly two things are sent: the public-domain passage and your child’s typed answer. Never a name, a photo, a voice, a location — nothing that identifies your child, and nothing that’s used to train AI models.

Passage + answer · nothing else
Always:

Your family owns the record

Your child’s reading history belongs to your family, full stop. It stays in your hands — never sold, never mined, never shared. Verafy’s business is the subscription, not your child’s data.

Never sold · never mined · never shared
How it works

Three things happen in every session.

First,

They read a great book

Your child picks from a curated library of classics. The book is read aloud at their pace — a patient narrator who never gets tired and never skips ahead — while your child follows on the page.

Real literature, full texts
Then,

The reading is verified

A gold reading zone sits still on the page. As the narration moves through the book, your child scrolls to keep the passage being read inside the zone. Doing that requires listening — it's effortless when you're following along and impossible when you're not. No camera-staring, no gimmicks: the act of following is the proof.

Patent-pending verification
Finally,

Understanding is checked

After the passage, the tutor asks a few real questions — not multiple-choice trivia — and gives feedback on the answers. Each verified session is added to your child's reading history, and a report card lands with you.

Honest questions, honest feedback
Your guide

Meet Vera Fy.

Vera Fy is the friendly host of Verafy Learning — a warm, patient guide who welcomes you in and walks you through the eyes-ears-hands method, whether you're six or sixty. She cheers the first sounded-out word and the first university-level idea alike. Vera is openly an AI and never pretends otherwise; she helps you learn, but she never does the verifying, and she never sees who you are. The proof of your learning is yours, and it stays on your device.

Her voice: warm, encouraging, plain-spoken, never condescending — works for children and adults.

The library

Books that have earned their place.

No licensed cartoon tie-ins, no leveled-reader filler. The starting shelf is drawn from the books families have trusted for a century — and it grows every month.

A sampling of the opening shelf. Full texts, beautifully set, read aloud by the voices on your device — with natural voices on Verafy Academy.

For parents

A weekly report card that proves it.

Every week you get a private report card of what your child read, what they understood, and proof they did the reading themselves — built from stats alone, never your child's name. It's the easiest way to know the learning is real. And soon, it's where your family's free local offers — pizza and prizes for earning enough points — arrive, too.

Higher learning

Verafy Guild

The Guild is where Verafy Learning goes deeper — university-level subjects taught online with the help of AI. "University-level" describes the difficulty of the material, nothing more: the Guild is not a university or a college, grants no degrees, and is not accredited. What it offers is rigorous subjects, taught well, at a price anyone can reach.

The very first Guild is operated by Verafy itself, so it carries only the base rate — $10/month per person — with no extra fees. AI assists the teaching here most of all, but the rule never changes: AI never performs the verification, and never receives anything personal about the learner. Your attention is proven by the same analog eyes-ears-hands loop, on your device. Verified learning earns Veramony, just like the Reader.

Enrollment is open at $10/month per person — create your free account and join. Full AI-taught course delivery is rolling out; the first subjects arrive from the Verafy-run Guild.

On any tablet you have

Any tablet becomes a real learning device.

You don't need anything fancy — we suggest an inexpensive Walmart ONN tablet, and it's plenty. Pin Verafy as the only app your child opens, and the tablet turns into a focused place to learn — no feeds, no store, no exits.

We don't sell a device — we just suggest one. Verafy works on any tablet.

Common questions

Who is Verafy for?
Verafy is for learners of every age — a six-year-old sounding out first words, a high-schooler working through algebra, an adult picking up a university subject for the love of it. If you're an adult, you own your account outright: set your own goals, choose your own subjects, learn at your own pace. If the learner is a child, a parent or guardian sets up and runs the account for them, with the protections that requires. The same verified-learning method works whether you're six or sixty; only who holds the account changes.
What can I learn on Verafy?
More than reading — though reading is the foundation everything else builds on, and it's where Verafy is most developed today. Reading and math are live now, with science, history, and more expanding, and university-level subjects available through Verafy Guild. Whatever the subject, the same idea holds: you engage it with eyes, ears, and hands, and the learning is verified by your real, sustained attention — not by a box you click. The reading experience is the first full expression of that method; each new subject extends it.
Is it really free?
Yes — Verafy Reader is free, and verified reading always will be, so no one is ever left out. The free plan gives you verified reading, the full great-books library, comprehension questions and feedback, notes and learning tools, and your weekly report card — at no cost, forever. Sign in with a free account and the reading questions, grading, and report are AI-assisted; use it anonymously and it stays entirely on your device with no AI at all. Verafy Academy ($10/month or $100/year per family of up to ten learners) adds the subject tutors — math now, expanding to science, history and more — two more reading modes, natural voices, and higher daily AI limits. Verafy Guild adds university-level subjects at $10/month per person.
Is Academy $10 per learner or per family?
Per family. One Academy subscription covers every learner in your household — up to ten — with no per-seat charges. Verafy Guild, for university-level subjects, is the one priced per person, at $10/month.
Why is it so affordable?
Because Verafy leads with great content and uses AI sparingly. Narration is prepared ahead of time, the reading AI runs on a small, efficient model (and not at all unless you're signed in), and even our paid plans keep AI lean — AI assists the teaching but never does the verification. Low costs in, low price out.
Isn't the AI doing the work for the learner?
No. In reading, a narrator reads along — aloud, at your pace, like a patient partner — but it never summarizes the chapter, never answers for you, and never writes a word on your behalf. The same line holds in every subject: when AI is involved, it works only around the edges of teaching — asking questions, checking answers, suggesting what's next, writing your report — but the actual work, and the actual thinking, is always the learner's own. That's what "minimal AI" means.
How do you actually know the learning really happened?
Our patent-pending verification ties the proof to the act of learning itself. In reading, a gold zone sits still on the page while the book is narrated, and you scroll to keep the passage being read inside it; keeping up requires continuous, real listening at a human pace — something a distracted learner, a bystander, or a bot can't fake. Comprehension questions then confirm the words actually landed. Other subjects apply the same principle through eyes, ears, and hands — attention you have to genuinely give, not a button you press to claim you were there.
Is this just more screen time?
It's the opposite of what worries you about screens. No feed, no autoplay, no notifications, nothing to scroll except the material itself. A session is a single sustained act of attention to one real thing worth learning — the kind of focus screens usually destroy.
What about privacy?
Learning runs entirely on your device — the lesson, the verification, and your history all stay home — and your data is never sold, shared, or used for advertising. If you're an adult, you own your account and control what's in it. If the account is a child's, we go further: the child is known to Verafy only by a chosen animal or icon — never a real name — while the operating parent's account holds a verified adult email, a ZIP code, and, with consent, the child's birth date (and a first name only if the parent adds one), which child-safety laws in many places require so we can apply age-appropriate protections. That stays in the account, never leaves the device during a session, and is never sold or shared. The only thing a device sends is a minimal weekly stats digest — verified minutes, sessions, points, and items, labeled for a child by their animal — to power the report card; it never includes a name, photo, or voice. Verification photos that confirm who did each session are taken and kept on the device; only the account owner ever sees them. When AI is involved — the free reading questions or a paid subject tutor — it receives only the public-domain lesson material and the learner's typed answer — nothing identifying, and nothing used to train AI models.
If you're privacy-first, why do you need my email?
Because every account is anchored by a real adult. If you're learning for yourself, that adult is simply you — your email is where your report card lands and how you recover your account. If the account is a child's, the verified adult email is how genuine parental consent works under COPPA: it proves a grown-up set things up and stays in charge. A child learner enrolls with just a chosen animal or icon and a birth date; a first name is optional and, if added, stays in the adult's account only. That — plus a ZIP code, so we follow local laws — is the whole of what we hold about your account, and we never sell, share, or spam any of it. We never ask whether you're a parent; we simply protect any learner whose birth date says they're a child.
Free Pizza & Prizes — do you sell my information?
No. We never sell, auction, or share your information. Local businesses pay us to fund rewards for families in their area — they don't buy a list and don't see your name or email. When a learner earns enough points, we send a voucher. A business only learns who you are if you choose to redeem it.
What do you collect for Free Pizza & Prizes?
Only two things, and only if you opt in: your ZIP or postal code, so we know which local rewards apply, and an adult email, so we can send the voucher. No learning data, names, photos, or voices are involved. You can leave with one click.
Do I need a special device?
No — Verafy runs in the browser on any tablet, phone, or computer you already own, on every plan. We don't sell a device; we just suggest an inexpensive one (a Walmart ONN works great) and, for younger learners, show you how to pin Verafy as the only app the tablet opens, so it becomes a focused place to learn. Our setup guide walks you through it.
How do Custom Voices work — and where does my voice go?
Custom Voices is an optional add-on (coming soon). An adult can create a narration voice from their own recording — for their own learning, or for a child's — and it always uses the adult's voice, never a child's. You record a short sample and give explicit consent; our voice partner synthesizes a narration voice from it once; and the finished audio for each title you choose is prepared on request and stored on your device, where it plays offline like any other narration. Names, children's voices, photos, and learning data are never part of the process, and your sample is used only to create your voice — never to train AI models.
Does it work for homeschool curricula?
Yes — it was built with homeschooling families first in mind, and it serves self-directed learners of any age just as well. The library leans classical, sessions slot into any schedule, and the session reports give you documentation of completed, verified learning you can keep with your records.
Who built this

Designed and coded by teacher grandparents.

Trey and Ellice Tomeny Trey & Ellice Tomeny

Trey and Ellice Tomeny are professional educators who live in Orem, Utah, with a combined nine children and seven grandchildren between them.

Trey was a founder of Legacy Christian Academy in Frisco, Texas, and of Coram Deo Academy in Flower Mound, Texas. He and his first wife homeschooled their two young boys until the day they started going to school with them — every day.

Ellice has been a public school art teacher since 2015, after her first husband passed.

Trey and Ellice share one of life’s heaviest burdens: each has buried a child. TJ, Trey’s oldest son, went to be with Jesus in 2005 at the age of 14. Joshua, Ellice’s middle son, entered eternity in 2016 at the age of 25, after a lifetime with spina bifida. Verafy Learning is built in their memory — for every hour a parent gets to spend reading with a child.

Trey and Ellice were married in 2021, and Verafy Learning is their first joint creation. Vera Fy herself — always openly an AI, never pretending otherwise — is their creation too, though around the Tomeny house she does get spoken of like family.
